On August 1st 2019, I visited this old and the same Blue Agave Nightclub for a concert.
Jerry Rivera. I knew his name for a while, but it was my very first time to see him. Classic salsa guy.
Born in 1974 in Puerto Rico. All his family are musicians.
Reviewing his songs
I checked his songs on YouTube before the concert.
Amores Como El Nuestro
Super famous piece! Many of you should know from the intro. I am not sure if this is his original song, but it is pretty well-known.
Dame Un Beso Asi
Such an old image lol
Cuenta conmigo
Esa Niña
Mi Libertad
Another famous piece singing with the legend Frankie Ruiz
So… how well knows is Jerry Rivera?
According to my Ecuadorian amiga Patty, this song was so popular back in the days. His songs bring nostalgia.
I also asked my coworker Mariana and of course she knew him and his songs too. He must be a star in PR, but also known in the salsa world.
Jerry River Concert
On the evening of the concert. My condition was not perfect and indecisive if I am going or not. In the end I left home for the concert because I didn’t want to regret missing out this opportunity.
From my past experience I decided to arrive around 11pm. Parked my car almost 11pm. I wanted to run to the venue but told myself to be calm and slow down.
I heard the dancing music from the venue and could easily tell that the concert hasn’t started yet. Arrived the venue, hit the quick bathroom break, and secured the space in the center. Still have time to start.
The show started at 11:30pm. Nothing surprise me any more.
So two back dancers opened the show , one guelo and the other moreno. Jerry won’t show up such a looooong time!
I felt sorry for Jerry because the sound quality of the mic was pretty bad at the beginning. This venue is not fancy at all. Low budgeted. Yet they hold a variety of salsa stars concerts. Eventually the sound improved and I was able to hear him singing from the speaker.
So… I still don’t know fully about him but is he like a pop star? Like an idol? Probably because I am so used to salsa groups that I find it a bit odd to see one main singer with two back dancers on the stage. It was a new experience. The stage is tiny too and back dancers need to well use the space.
Last three songs
I liked it becaus he performed famous songs in different versions. As a young salsa singer (well, he’s 45yo but he’s definitely a younger side as a salsa singer) he seems very sincere and diligent. I received very good impressions. I wish him the best to work for eternal prosperity of salsa music.
